Minister of Defence Adam Shareef announced late Tuesday that an amendment to the Armed Forces Act will be lobbied to the parliament this year to ban military officers from voting in elections.

Inaugurating Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF)’s 12th Drill Competition at a special event held at Kalhuthukkalaa Koshi in capital Male, Defence Minister Shareef declared that lack of bias and separation from politics are imperative in carrying out the mandate of armed forces.

The right to vote is currently accorded to every Maldivian citizen over the age of 18 under Article 26 of the Constitution.
