The Maldives on Monday abruptly cancelled the parliament sitting scheduled for Tuesday without notice.

Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh had announced Tuesday’s session at the end of Monday’s sitting. The parliament’s agenda for Tuesday was also publicised on its official website. However, the agenda has since been taken down.

A Parliament official stated that the speaker has now informed all members that the eighth sitting of this year’s second term scheduled for Tuesday has been called off. However, the official did not disclose a reason for the cancellation.

“The date for the next parliament session will be announced later.”

The sudden cancellation comes in the wake of a submission by the joint opposition to seek a motion of no confidence against Speaker Maseeh. The petition was submitted with the signatures of 45 members including 10 lawmakers of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
