Maldives sentences expat to life for drug smuggling

The Criminal Court on Monday sentenced an expatriate to life imprisonment for smuggling drugs weighing over 500 grams, with a penalty of MVR 100,000.

The Bangladeshi national Mohammed Moklas was arrested in February 2016 for smuggling 762 grams of drugs in his luggage.

The Criminal Court’s verdict reads that investigation reports, witness testimonies and supporting evidence prove that he had been in possession of 762 grams of Cannabis.

The court verdict orders the penalty to be paid within one month as stated in the Constitution.
