Members of the Maldives’ rights watchdog met with the leadership of Maldives Police Service on Wednesday regarding the recent upsurge in gang violence in capital Male.
There has been five incidents of gang violence over the course of the last fortnight which saw the deaths of two young men. In a statement released after the meeting, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) stressed that the right to life is accorded to each individual under the Constitution.
HRCM stated that its members discussed with Police how to strengthen the latter’s efforts to ensure the safety and security of the people, determine the causes behind gang violence, and ways to prevent such incidences from repeating.
The commission added that it will work with authorities on a national level to establish a safe and secure environment for the people.
