President Abdulla Yameen has revealed that the new 25-storey building, which is in the development and initially believed to be an extension of state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), is a separate new hospital to be named “Dharumavantha Hospital”.

In his address at the opening ceremony of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s new campaign hub, the president said, “The new 25-storey medical building is being finished. God willing, Dharumavantha Hospital will be opened around the middle of next year and it will become a centre that provides advanced medical services never seen before in the Maldives.”

The government awarded the project to Chung Hwa of Singapore for a staggering MVR 2.1 billion, which has led to accusations by the opposition that there had been other companies that proposed lower bids. Mihaaru understands that the budget does not cover procurement of equipment for the new hospital and that MVR 2.1 billion is the expenditure only for construction.

It was previously thought to be an extension of IGMH until President Yameen disclosed in his address that the finished building will be opened as a new hospital.

“God willing, we’re looking to open Dharumavantha Hospital by July 26 next year,” he said.
