Maldives pres not entitled to law defying whims, says opposition

Lawmaker of North Henveiru Constituency Abdulla Shahid

The lawmaker of North Henveiru constituency and member of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Abdulla Shahid proclaimed late Wednesday that the Constitution of the Maldives does not allow the president to do whatever he pleases and, hence, incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom needs to fall back within the precincts of the Constitution.

Making the remark at the opposition rally held at Gaafu Alif atoll Villingili island on Wednesday night, the former Speaker of Parliament Shahid noted that the Maldives has adapted to people’s power and that it was the old Constitution which enabled presidents to act on their whims without consequence or restraint.

Shahid stressed that the citizens will not merely watch on in silence while the state governs outside the limits of the Constitution.

Declaring that the success of the opposition’s joint reform efforts is being witnessed in various parts of the country, MP Shahid added that Huvadhoo Atoll and GA. Villingili no longer support the government today.
