President Abdulla Yameen has proposed to appoint Mohamed Hussain Shareef as the new Ambassador of the Maldives to Sri Lanka.

The president’s proposal is scheduled to be discussed in Parliament on Tuesday when it resumes sitting after a hiatus of 22 days. The issue will be forwarded to a permanent committee during Tuesday’s session.

The president nominated Shareef as his pick for the position after the government dismissed the previous ambassador, Zahiya Zareer, last week. It remains unclear why Zahiya, who was appointed to the post in May 2014, was laid off. Mihaaru understands that Zahiya is currently making preparations to return to the Maldives soon.

Mohamed Hussain Shareef holds a Master’s Degree in Diplomacy and was the spokesperson of the President’s Office during the administration of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. He has also served as the Minister of Youth and Sports and as the minister of the President’s Office in the current government.

He is currently the Ambassador of the Maldives to Japan.

Sri Lanka is currently the residing place of several senior officials of the opposition. Convicted former President Mohamed Nasheed has also been in the country for around a month now, where opposition members have been conducting activities.

The other agenda scheduled for Tuesday’s parliament sit-down is the appointment of Ahmed Naseer as the new governor of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).
