President Abdulla Yameen and First Lady Fathmath Ibrahim will be departing to Saudi Arabia to perform the holy Islamic pilgrimage of Hajj on Thursday, sources close to the president have revealed.

President Yameen had sent a message to a Viber group comprising cabinet ministers, ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Parliamentary group, and some council members, informing them of his departure, the source said.

The president, in his message, also urged the politicians to stay proactive during his departure.

The president and his wife had made the pilgrimage to Mecca in 2014 and 2015 as well. This is the third time the couple will be performing the holy duty since he assumed office.
