The President of the Maldives Abdulla Yameen expressed ‘regret’ over the decision of the United States to withdraw from the Paris Climate Change Agreement.

US President Donald Trump has announced the decision to withdraw from the agreement made in 2015 between 195 countries, claiming threats to US economy on sovereignty.

In a statement released by President Abdulla Yameen, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted on behalf of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) that the US’ decision does not only represent a blow to global efforts against climate change, but is also a setback for the multilateral process that is essential for governing the international community.

“As one of the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, and a leader of 37 island- and low-lying coastal nations at the United Nations, we are especially disappointed that the world’s largest economy and biggest historic emitter abdicated its responsibility on such a critical issue,” read the statement.
