President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom asserted that independent institutions are being operated in accordance with the Constitution and proclaimed that he has never pried into any judiciary cases.

Speaking at the ceremony held late Tuesday to receive membership forms of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s newest members, President Yameen countered longstanding allegations by the opposition and critics that the verdicts of the courts are orchestrated by the president.

He stated that he would only look into a court case if the trials are being dragged out, in which case he would only urge the judiciary to expedite the cases.

“But I shall never work to rule a case or overturn a case in a certain way,” he declared.
