Maldives, Pakistan enter six pacts

The governments of the Maldives and Pakistan signed six agreements Tuesday to strengthen bilateral relations between the two South Asian allies.

The signing ceremony was held at the President’s Office on Tuesday evening with President Abdulla Yameen and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in attendance.

Tourism pact

The Maldives’ Minister of Tourism Moosa Zameer and Pakistan’s Tourism Development Corporation’s Managing Director Chaudhary Abdul Ghafoor Khan signed a “Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Maldives and the Government of Pakistan on Matters Relating to Tourism”.

Foreign Affairs pact

The Maldives’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamed Asim and Pakistan’s Advisor to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz signed a “Memorandum of Understanding between the Foreign Service Institute of Maldives and the Foreign Service Academy of Pakistan”.

Trade pact

The Maldives’ Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed and Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s President Zubair F. Tufail signed the “Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation on the Matters of a Maldives-Pakistan Joint Business Council between the Ministry of Economic Development and the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce”.

Environment pact

The Maldives’ Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Irahim and the High Commissioner of Pakistan to the Maldives Vice Admiral (retired) Sayyid Khawar Ali Shah signed the “Memorandum of Understanding in the Fields of Climate Change and Environmental Protection Between the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Maldives and Ministry of Climate Change of Pakistan”.

Education pact

The Maldives National University (MNU)’s Chancellor Dr Mohamed Latheef and the Virtual University of Pakistan’s Rector Dr Naveed A Malik signed the “Memorandum of Understanding between the Maldives National University and the Virtual University of Pakistan”.

Civil Service pact

The Civil Service Commission’s Dr Ali Shameem and Pakistan’s National Management College’s Dean Naeem Aslam signed the “Memorandum of Understanding between the Civil Service Commission, Maldives, and the National School of Public Policy, Pakistan”.
