Maldives opposition on Wednesday denied increasing rumours that it plans to dissolve the country’s military if elected.
Speaking during a press conference, opposition alliance presidential candidate’s campaign spokesperson Mariya Ahmed Didi said the party’s manifesto clearly stipulates that it has no plans to dissolve the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).
“If you look at our manifesto you would see that our plan is to strengthen state institutions. Not dissolve them,” Mariya said.
She also accused the police of continuing to impede the opposition campaigning efforts by blocking and removing campaign posters and flags being put up especially in the capital Male.
Mariya urged the authorities to provide an equal platform for the opposition to campaign for the crunch presidential elections slated for September 23.
