Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr Mohamed Shainee on Thursday censured Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom for “undemocratic practices” by joining forces with opposition political parties.
Speaking at the press conference held to invite political parties for talks again, Minister Shainee declared that there is no fault to be found in the government despite the pact signed by opposition leaders including Maumoon to work against the current administration. He also declared that Former President Maumoon, who has been ousted as the leader of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), is no longer within rights to represent PPM in the pact.
The minister went on to remark that while social media are circulating “a piece of signed paper”, the three courts of judiciary had officially stripped Former President Maumoon of his authority as PPM’s leader even while he was a member of the ruling party and handed over party control to its advisor, incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. He added that such a verdict came about as Maumoon had violated the principles of democracy and PPM’s charter.
