Maldives marks 55 years as UN member

Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres addresses the United Nations Security Council at the United Nations Headquarters in New York

MALE, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) — In a message to mark the Maldives’ 55th year as a member state of the United Nations, President Ibrahim Solih emphasised his country’s commitment to the values and principles enshrined in the UN Charter, state media reported here Tuesday.

Solih said his country had transformed from an impoverished state to a middle-income country powered by tourism after being admitted to the world organization.

The Maldives has emerged as an island-nation actively engaged in international diplomacy to resolve pressing issues such as climate change and the current COVID-19 pandemic, Solih said.

Multilateral engagement and mutual respect among nations are the basis for resolving challenges faced both nationally and internationally, he added.
