Maldives looks to strengthen religious unity, patriotism

The government has decided to launch a major movement to strengthen Islamic oneness and national spirit among Maldivians.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office on Wednesday, Minister of Defence Adam Shareef Umar announced that the project will be conducted by a special committee put together by the president. The project seeks to identify the factors essential to raising a generation who knows to respect and behave, and ways to implement this.

The committee is comprised of Defence Minister Adam Shareef, Minister of Education Dr Aishath Shiham, Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Ziyad Baqir, Chief of Defence Force Major General Ahmed Shiyam, Islamic University of Maldives’ Chancellor Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed and former minister Abdul Rasheed Hussain.

According to the Defence Minister, several activities will be conducted among students and youth to increase Islamic oneness and patriotism. These activities will include discussions among different age groups, competitions on poster making and essay writing, and drama presentations.

“This is a long term project. Its first phase will be a three year project from March 1 till the end of 2019.”

Education Minister Dr Aishath Shiham declared that President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom prioritises social harmony alongside the economic developments his administration has brought to the Maldives. She stated that the new project will be conducted with public participation, and aims to establish a cultured society of harmony and unity.

The title of the project will be announced during the inauguration ceremony.
