Maldives is becoming an affordable destination, with return flights from Aus$374

Think you can’t afford a Maldives holiday? Think again.

Hot competition among airlines is seeing flights to the idyllic island destination tumble to a jaw-dropping low of $374 return from Australia.

The AirAsia flight deal, for select dates in early May, is the lowest price we can remember for the beach holiday playground favoured by the rich and famous.

The $374 price applies to flights from Perth departing on May 1 or 3, and returning May 8 or 10, via Kuala Lumpur.

Fares from Sydney start from $463 (for April 30 and May 2 departures, returning May 8 or 10) and Melbourne from $498 (departing May 1 or 3, returning May 8 or 10).

So, what’s the catch? The fares don’t include checked luggage, and only a handful of seats were available at the time of writing.

However, even if you miss out this time, the downward trend of flight prices to the Maldives is good news for those whose wanderlust outweighs their wallets.

Late last year, budget airline Scoot advertised one-way sale fares to the Maldives from $199.

While you still have the difficulty of finding affordable accommodation in the archipelago known for its ultra-luxury resorts, there’s good news on that front too.

The soon to open Mercure Maldives Kooddoo Resort promises to deliver value accommodation in a location (the Gaafu Alifu Atoll) accessible by a domestic flight rather than charter or speedboat.

Mercure Maldives Kooddoo Resort is set to offer affordable accommodation in the Maldives.
