Maldives discusses socio-economic development with Japan

The governments of Maldives and Japan on Monday discussed to expand mutual cooperation in areas relating to the social and economic development of the archipelago.

The discussion was held between Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid and his Japanese counterpart, Motegi Toshimitsu, at a meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

During the sit-down, the two foreign ministers also discussed regional and global issues of mutual interest including maritime cooperation.

Foreign Minister Shahid further expressed appreciation to Japan for its continued support to the development of Maldives throughout its development journey.

Moreover, Shahid conveyed greetings on the historic enthronement of Japanese Emperor Naruhito. He also congratulated Motegi Toshimitsu’s recent appointment as the Foreign Minister.

Furthermore, he extended sympathies to the government and people of Japan on the devastation and loss of lives caused by Typhoon Hagibis, and reaffirmed the support of the Maldivian government and people.

The Foreign Minister is accompanying President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on his ongoing official visit to Japan from October 20-27, to attend the Enthronement Ceremony of Emperor Naruhito.
