The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) refused to provide security to Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom on his personal visit to neighbouring India on Wednesday.

Mihaaru understands that two bodyguards who were originally appointed as security for the former president and his wife were abruptly ordered to return to the capital Male after they had checked-in at Velana International Airport.

The reason behind MNDF’s refusal to provide security to accompany the former president on his trip remains unclear. Upon inquiry, MNDF’s spokesperson Adnan Mohamed replied cryptically that the institute does not provide comments regarding security to media.

According to a senior official of Former President Maumoon’s faction of the divided ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), the official reason given for abruptly recalling the appointed security detail is that Maumoon had not requested the security officially in writing at the MNDF.

However, the official noted Maumoon had never had to request security in writing before.

Under the Protection of Former Presidents Act, MNDF is mandated to arrange security to all former presidents.
