The Maldives has for the first time commenced exporting canned fish under the Fair Trade Certificate, giving three percent of the direct profit to fishermen.

The Fair Trade Certificate was achieved by Jumhoory Party leader Qasim Ibrahim’s Horizon Fisheries company in Laamu atoll Maandhoo island.

During the press conference held in commemoration of the event, Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Mohamed Shainee declared that this is the first time that canned fish is being exported to the international market with an MMC certificate for sustainable fishing and Fair Trade Logo. He reiterated that this is an honor for the Maldives’ fisheries sector.
