The foreign ministry stated Saturday that implementation of the Supreme Court’s landmark verdict is underway and that there is no fear for any tourists in the Maldives amidst the current politically charged atmosphere.

While the statement from the foreign ministry claimed that the government supports the court’s verdict, several nations and international organizations have called out the Maldivian government for the delays in executing the order. The statement gave assurance to Maldivians and international organizations that the government is working with the authorities to implement the court’s decisions.

According to the foreign ministry, discussions are underway between the relevant authorities and Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed to overcome all the constitutional concerns in implementing the orders. The Prosecutor General has also submitted the paperwork to the court.

The United States and the United Kingdom have advised their citizens in the Maldives to take caution amidst the political turmoil in the country. However, the foreign ministry claimed that the Maldives is safe for all tourists and that the political issues will soon be resolved.

The apex court of Maldives ordered 12 “unseated” parliament members to be reinstated and key political figures to be released in an unforeseen court order issued late Thursday. Despite the orders, no one has been released from custody and the opposition and its supporters continue to protest the delay in carrying out the ruling.
