President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday appointed Dr Asim Ahmed as the Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations (UN).
President Solih presented the letter of appointment to Dr Asim at a special ceremony held at the President’s Office.
The parliament approved Dr Asim’s appointment as the UN Permanent Representative on July 22. His predecessor was Dr Hala Hameed.
Dr Asim was previously the Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He had formerly filled high government positions including the Minister of Education and the president of the Local Government Authority (LGA).
Furthermore, Dr Asim had served on a number of boards, committees and high-level councils, including the National Security Council.
The new Permanent Representative attained a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Politics at the University of South Pacific, Fiji, in 1989, and a Master of Philosophy in Development Studies from the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Sussex, UK, in 1992.
Dr Asim completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Social Policy at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, in 2011.
