‘Maldives aims to increase renewable energy’: Env Minister Dr Hussain

Minister of Environment Dr Hussain Rasheed Hassan elaborated on Maldives’ vision to generate electricity using renewable energy sources.

The Minister, while delivering the opening statement at the ‘3rd Global RE-Invest’ forum session on the Maldives, specified that such documents and strategic action plans needed to carry out its goals were now compiled.

Commencing on November 26, the three-day Global RE-Invest session was supported by the World Bank, the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and RE-Invest India.

Among those in attendance were India’s Minister of New and Renewable Energy Raj Kumar Singh, World Bank’s Global Director for Transport and Regional Director for Infrastructure in South Asia, Guangzhe Chen, World Bank’s Country Director for Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka Faris Hadad-Zervos and representatives of the International Solar Alliance.

Recently, the environment ministry and Thailand-based Ensys Co. Ltd, on November 24, signed a 5-megawatt solar project under the World Bank and Maldives’ initiative Accelerating Sustainable Private Investment in Renewable Energy (ASPIRE).

The Environment Minister previously iterated its target to produce 20 per cent of all energy requirements through renewable sources by 2023.
