Ruling party Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s Secretary General Dr Abdulla Khaleel declared that the outcome of the Malaysian general elections show that people would always say yes to leaders who bring about development.
The 92-year-old Dr Mahathir Mohamad from the opposition coalition, Pakatan Harapan, won the competitive elections in Malaysia. He is set to become the oldest prime minister, defeating Najib Razak and the six-decade rule of the Barisan Nasional coalition.
Nilandhoo MP Khaleel tweeted saying that Dr Mahathir’s reelection indicates that people will say yes to a leader who brought about development at any time.
Mahathir was the Malaysian prime minister from 1981 to 2003 and was in retirement before returning to politics for this year’s elections.
Relating the results of this election to the Maldives, Khaleel proclaimed that the incumbent President Abdulla Yameen was the leader who brought similar developments to the Maldives.
PPM’s parliamentary group leader and Villimale MP Ahmed Nihan also commended the outcome of the Malaysian elections. He declared that the country’s citizens had made the choice against corruption, and urged the people of the Maldives to vote for President Yameen in the upcoming elections for the same reason.
“Indeed, every corrupt individual has been prosecuted and jailed in the tenure of President Yameen,” he said, referring to several opposition members, parliamentarians and court judges currently undergoing criminal trials under various charges.
Meanwhile, the joint opposition has declared that Mahathir’s victory shows that people are saying no to corruption. Former President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik also tweeted saying that the Malaysian elections have proven that age should not be a factor, and was a lesson for all Maldivians.
