President Abdulla Yameen on Thursday congratulated Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad on being elected as the new prime minister of Malaysia.

In the president’s message, he congratulated the newly elected PM on behalf of all Maldivians.

President Yameen noted that it was Dr Mahathir’s legacy of statesmanship and commitment to nation-building from when he last held office that won him the election.

He added that ” your reelect manifests the firm trust and confidence that the people of Malaysia continue to place in you to take on a promising chapter of development and progress.”

In the congratulatory message, the president highlighted the friendship between Malaysia and the Maldives. He further expressed hope that both countries will be able to continue to develop a “dynamic and mutually beneficial relationship.”
