The long awaited ultramodern Tree Top Hospital was officially opened and commenced services early Thursday.

The USD 110 million (MVR 1.7 billion) hospital boasting world-class healthcare, which was an initiative of some of the leading magnates of the Maldives, opened with a consultation fee of MVR 750. The hospital offers a special 30 percent discount for locals, lowering the fee to MVR 525.

An official of Tree Top Hospital stated Thursday that Aasandha, the national healthcare insurance scheme of the archipelago, is currently offered only to inpatients. However, the hospital assured that Aasandha would soon be offered to outpatients as well.

“Several people booked appointments here even before we officially commenced services,” the official revealed.

The hospital, managed in collaboration with Australia’s Ramsey Group and Malaysia’s Sine Darby, boasts 210 beds with staff from 30 different countries.

A special ferry operating hourly between Hulhumale and capital Male, will be available for patients seeking services of the hospital. Tree Top estimates that the ferry will be in high demand until the government opens the landmark China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, which will connect Male and Hulhumale via the airport island Hulhule, later this year.

Adam Saleem, one of the directors of Tree Top Investments, had earlier revealed that patients from Male will first utilize the services of the hospital’s clinic based in the capital, which will house general doctors and specialist doctors, after which the patients would be referred to Tree Top Hospital in Hulhumale if necessary.
