Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Deputy Chairperson Ali Niyaz proclaimed that the recent Local Council Elections were held and results obtained by force.
Speaking at the rally held by the joint opposition at MDP’s main activity hub last Saturday night, Niyaz claimed that he was informed a week post-election that the Elections Commission is still unable to collect six results sheets out of total 8,503 sheets.
He added that none of the revealed results have been verified yet and are still in the process of being checked. However, he stressed that no matter how long it takes, the results cannot be changed.
He slammed the government saying that despite the number of times the ballot papers are recounted, the citizens have already decided that they no longer support the government or President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
Noting that the citizens have also refused the new amendments presented to the Decentralization Act, Niyaz vowed that if the opposition receives majority of the parliament seats, the Act will be amended to its previous form.
