Lawyers have brought to the attention of Police an alleged plot to assassinate the jailed former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb.

In a letter to Maldives Police Service this Sunday by Mahfooz Saeed of Adheeb’s legal team, he claimed to have received information of a plot to murder the former vice president in his cell at Dhoonidhoo Detention Centre. He requested Police to take all steps necessary to investigate the case and prevent such an occurrence.

The alleged plot to assassinate Adheeb has been brought to public attention in the wake of a photograph released to social media that depicts a person said to be Adheeb in his cell. While the photograph does not clearly show the face of the man who is lying down, Adheeb’s wife Mariyam Nashwa told Mihaaru that it is very likely Adheeb as the man’s sleeping pose is akin to that of her husband. She added that the cell is similar to how Adheeb has described it.

Police declined to comment regarding the identity of the person in the photograph. However, they confirmed that the cell depicted is in Dhoonidhoo Detention Centre and stated that they are looking into the leak.

Adheeb is sentenced to 33 years in jail over various convictions, including his involvement in the largest corruption scandal in the history of the Maldives and for orchestrating an assassination plot against President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. Meanwhile, his family claims that he is suffering from several medical conditions such as kidney stones, an internal cyst and glaucoma, and has requested permission from authorities to send him abroad for medical treatment. However, the government responded that the risk of Adheeb absconding is too high to allow him to leave the country.
