He was terminated from the party over constant votes against the party’s whip line, defaming the party and government, and supporting the motion of no confidence against the parliament speaker which was initiated by the opposition.
After a chance to respond to the matter, Ameeth was removed with a unanimous vote by PPM’s five-member disciplinary committee. However, Ameeth denies that he was given a proper opportunity to respond to the committee.
According to Ameeth, he had presented himself to the committee with his lawyer, Thulusdhoo MP Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim, where he had questioned the constitutional authority of the committee.
“I told them that I wanted to respond to the matter but after clarifying the constitutional authority of the committee,” he said, adding that his query had halted the committee proceedings.
Ameeth’s lawyer Waheed had also questioned the authenticity of the committee as the disciplinary committee had been suspended by the former leader of PPM, Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom, prior to the court order that stripped Maumoon of party control which was handed over to PPM’s advisor, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom. Hence, Waheed said that the committee can only resume operations after providing an official document confirming the withdrawal of its suspension.
