Jumhoory Party leader Qasim Ibrahim was brought to the Criminal Court early Sunday for the second hearing of his trial.

The state is pressing three charges against the lawmaker of Maamigili constituency for attempted bribery, coercion with regards to official duties and undue influence on voters. He denied all three charges during the first hearing held April 13.

Qasim is to present his defence in Sunday’s hearing.

Meanwhile, he was arrested for a second time late Thursday under a court order. The Criminal Court added 15 days to his remand the next day.

His arrest order was issued on request of Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham and accused Qasim of bribing lawmakers and working to illicitly topple the government. However, his first arrest order was issued on request of Police and thus the High Court had eventually overturned his remand, declaring that his arrest violated the Parliamentary Privileges Act.
