The Criminal Court has cancelled the hearing of Jumhoory Party’s leader Qasim Ibrahim scheduled for Sunday after the opposition leader was hospitalised after his condition worsened.

The lawmaker of Maamigili constituency, who is suffering from a heart condition, was admitted to ADK Hospital at dawn on Sunday. He had previously been hospitalised and the court had called off two hearings due to his poor health.

According to his lawyers, doctors of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) have advised Qasim Ibrahim to undergo a surgery called “EPA+RFP” for his worsening heart condition, which is not available in the Maldives. Qasim and his representatives have requested permission from the authorities multiple times to go abroad for treatment, which the government has denied.

He was placed under a travel ban on a court order on July 16 after he was hospitalised ad Medica Hospital.
