Former Police Commissioner and lawmaker of Kinbidhoo constituency Abdulla Riyaz finally provided his mobile phone’s passcode to Maldives Police Service late Thursday for their investigation against him.

The deputy leader of opposition Jumhoory Party finally gave his passcode at the hearing of his trial held at the Criminal Court over intentionally obstructing a law enforcement officer. He was charged as he had previously refused to give up his passcode saying that he does not remember it.

After the hearing, Riyaz’s lawyer Hisaan Hussain said that as he has give up his passcode to Police, the judge concluded that a decision would be made on his hearing next Sunday.

Riyaz claimed that this charge was pressed against him due to the reform work currently conducted by the joint opposition. He added that the modern world does not charge political leaders for their statements and that President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is unable to digest the remarks of the opposition.

“I was a law enforcement officer for 25 years. There is no way that I would shatter the law” said Riyaz after his trial.
