Opposition Jumhoory Party has resumed preparing its manifesto for the upcoming presidential election preliminarily slated for September this year.

The party’s council and leadership met at its Male office to discuss the presidential manifesto on Sunday.

According to Jumhoory Party’s spokesperson Ali Solih, the party had begun preparing its manifesto earlier this year; however, it had to pause its work due to the state of emergency that was declared February 5.

Solih also said that it was important to have Jumhoory Party’s own manifesto even though it is part of the opposition coalition with the biggest opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), religiously conservative Adhaalath Party, and the supporters of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom.

“We informed our coalition partners that we are preparing the manifesto – it’s no secret. So I don’t think there are any factors that could obstruct our work,” Solih said.

The Jumhoory Party is also preparing to hold its congress, and a committee to oversee the work has also been created, Solih added.

He said that there are amendments that need to be brought to the general regulations of the party and that these amendments have been publicized on Jumhoory Party’s website for public review and comment.

Currently, Jumhoory Party’s regulation only allows its leader to run for the presidency on behalf of the party. However, its leader Qasim Ibrahim, who is in self-exile in Germany, was barred from running in the election after the Criminal Court convicted him for three-year and two months in prison on bribery charges.
