The Criminal Court on Monday decided to hold the trial of arrested Judicial Administrator Hassan Saeed behind closed doors.

Hassan Saeed was arrested amidst the state of emergency the government had announced soon after the Supreme Court’s order on February 1 to free nine political leaders. While the Criminal Court had previously ordered to arrest Saeed before the emergency was announced, the top court had overturned the initial warrant.

Saeed is accused of obstructing legal duties. It is not yet clear why his trial is to be held behind closed doors. The court has also postponed the hearing that was first scheduled for Monday.

In addition to Hassan, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, and Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Judge Ali Hameed of the apex court were also arrested under the state of emergency. The lower court began the chief justice’s trial Sunday, while Maumoon and Hameed’s are still pending.
