The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Thursday suspended the jailed Chief Justice Abdullah Saeed.

According to the judicial watchdog, Judge Saeed was suspended as he is currently in police custody being investigated for several serious allegations.

He would remain suspended until the police conclude its investigation and all proceedings related the charges have been completed, JSC stated.

With the consensus of three Supreme Court judges on Tuesday, the court took a U-turn on its landmark ruling and revoked the decision to release nine political prisoners and bar the judicial watchdog from investigating the top court judges.

Following the top court’s most recent ruling, JSC announced Supreme Court Judge Ali Hameed’s suspension on Wednesday. He was arrested along with the Chief Justice and Judicial Service Administrator Hassan Saeed early on Tuesday, hours after troops in riot gear stormed the premises of the top court.

Former president and President Abdulla Yameen’s half-brother Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom and his son-in-law were also arrested from their home, the same night.

The police have since revealed that some of the charges it is investigating against Judge Saeed, which include: accepting bribes, asserting undue influence on the judiciary, and conspiracy to overthrow the government.

Meanwhile, the state of emergency declared by the president for a period of 15-days is still in effect, despite international pressured to revoke the declaration.
