Jumhoory Party’s General Secretary Ahmed Sameer declared Tuesday that the party’s leader Qasim Ibrahim, who is currently hospitalised, is in serious condition and that there is no additional treatments available in the Maldives for his heart ailment.

Sameer said that Qasim’s health continues to worsen daily and that doctors are in despair on what more can be done.

Noting that doctors have already declared that Qasim Ibrahim is in dire need of a heart surgery that is not available in the Maldives, Sameer stated that doctors repeated the same words after Qasim’s MRI scan on Monday.

“They said they can’t administer the required treatment without the operation even if he is admitted,” said Sameer.

Highlighting that Qasim has provided generous aid to Maldivians for both education and healthcare, Sameer stated that the local tycoon and lawmaker is now at a very “fragile” point. He condemned the government for depriving Qasim Ibrahim of his basic right to medicine and treatment, describing the action as inhumane.

The lawmaker of Maamigili constituency is currently on trial for allegedly bribing lawmakers. The judiciary has imposed a travel ban on Qasim, forbidding him from travelling abroad until the end of his trial. While his family and lawyers have requested the authorities to grant him permission to seek treatment overseas on multiple counts, the state continues to refuse.

Sameer declared repeatedly that as Qasim has not been convicted of any crime yet, the government must make arrangements for Qasim’s treatment, even if it comes to appointing an official to travel abroad with the lawmaker.
