Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) parliamentary group leader and Hinnavaru MP Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that the opposition coalition has compiled a manifesto to back a single candidate for the upcoming presidential elections.
Amidst ruling party’s allegations of conflict between the opposition coalition, MP Solih spoke at a press conference held at Jumhoory Party (JP) main party hub and stated that the opposition coalition will be backing a single candidate for the elections under their manifesto.
The presidential candidate application will be sent to the Elections Commission with the name of the opposition coalition candidate, he added.
MP Solih revealed that the opposition coalition committee designated for the upcoming elections and 2019 elections have revised the compiled a manifesto with the leaders of the parties, adding that details of the manifesto will be revealed soon.
The Hinnavaru MP further expressed confidence in the opposition, stating that the opposition will succeed the upcoming presidential elections.
Whilst opposition coalition is looking to present former president Mohamed Nasheed of MDP and JP leader Gasim Ibrahim as their presidential candidates, both Nasheed and Gasim are ineligible due to legal procedures.
MP Solih has been an instrumental figure in leading the opposition coalition activities since most of its leaders, including former President Mohamed Nasheed and Jumhoory Party’s leader Qasim Ibrahim are currently in self-exile, while others are serving time in prison on serious allegations. The experienced lawmaker was first elected to the parliament as Lhaviyani Atoll MP in 1994.
