Japan, Maldives discuss assistance to development projects

The governments of Maldives and Japan has held discussions assistance to new development projects in the Maldives.

A high-level Maldivian delegation, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid, Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail and Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer arrived in Tokyo, Japan for discussions with the Japanese government last Wednesday.

The delegation met with Minister of Foreign of Japan, Taro Kono, this Thursday morning.

During the meeting, Minister Taro Kono reiterated the commitment of the Japanese government to strengthen relations between the two countries, and grant further assistance in the economic and social development of Maldives, especially in fisheries, tourism and environment, reports Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives.

The meeting with Minister Taro Kono follows a meeting with the Minister of Environment of Japan, Yoshiaki Harada earlier this Thursday.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives reports that the two governments discussed possible new projects to strengthen the resilience of Maldives in combating climate change, especially in coastal protection, and water supply services and sanitation services in Maldivian islands.

Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pledged to restore and strengthen diplomatic ties between the Maldives and its bilateral partners.

Ministers Abdulla Shahid, Fayyaz Ismail and Ibrahim Ameer travelled to Japan directly from India, where they joined President Solih for a three-day State visit.

Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has so far travelled to India, Japan and UAE for discussions with foreign governments.
