Jailed opposition lawmaker Ahmed Mahloof’s family announced that Mahloof will depart to India this Tuesday for further medical treatment.
This is the second time Mahloof has been allowed to go abroad for treatment. His last medical trip was last December during which Maldives Correctional Service had granted him a 10-day stay.
However, this time he is granted only seven days.
Mahloof was given permission to go abroad as his allergy problems have begun to act up again.
According to his wife Nazra Naseem, doctors from India as well as the Maldives have recommended regular injections for three months.
“Doctors who treated him in India said he should take three doses,” added Nazra.
She further stated that everything has been arranged for Mahloof’s trip and that he has also signed an agreement guaranteeing his return within the given period.
The independent MP for South Galolhu, who is also the spokesperson of the Maldives United Opposition (MOU), was first sentenced to four months and 24 days in prison after the Criminal Court found him guilty of obstructing police officers during an opposition protest in April 2016. A week later, he received a further six months for pushing police barricades and entering a restricted area during a protest in March 2015.
It is noteworthy that the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) has raised concerns over the health of the lawmaker and has recommended the Maldives government to change his sentence to house arrest.
