Jailed opposition lawmaker Ahmed Mahloof returned to the Maldives late Monday after his trip to India for medical treatment.
Mahloof had departed for India on February 21 on his second trip to seek medical help. Maldives Corrections Service had first allowed him to go abroad last December.
According to his wife Nazra Naseem, Correctional Service escorted Mahloof back to Maafushi Prison upon his arrival.
Noting that doctors had recommended injection doses for three months to combat his serious allergies, Nazra explained that he had received the first dose on this trip and has to return to India for the follow-up next month.
The independent MP for South Galolhu, who is also the spokesperson of the Maldives United Opposition (MOU), was first sentenced to four months and 24 days in prison after the Criminal Court found him guilty of obstructing police officers during an opposition protest in April 2016. A week later, he received a further six months for pushing police barricades and entering a restricted area during a protest in March 2015.
