Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed stated that the privileges granted to jailed Adhaalath Party’s leader, Sheikh Imran Abdulla, were cut as he had violated his agreement with authorities by giving an interview.

Speaking on local channel SanguTV, Azleen explained that an agreement was made with Imran before shifting him to house arrest, which specified the things he is permitted and prohibited from doing. The minister proclaimed that Imran achieved his political motive by giving an interview during his house arrest.

During this interview to Raajje TV, Sheikh Imran who is serving a 12-year jail sentence stated that only strength and patience can overcome the torture inflicted by the goverment.

According to Maldives Correctional Service, the privileges which include weekly phone calls have now been limited to two phone calls per month and less frequent family meetings.

While Adhaalath Party claims that Imran is kept in the unit allocated for major criminals such as murderers, Corrections have denied the allegation.
