Island resort Outrigger Konotta Maldives will add a special splash of luxury to your romantic getaway

NO ONE in the history of weddings has ever needed a honeymoon more then we did.

At least that’s how it felt to my new wife Elaine and I after a year of planning.

The Outrigger Konotta Maldives resort is an idyllic resort paradise

Suffice to say that by the time our big day came and went we both knew that we were badly in need of some downtime on an idyllic paradise island.

Luckily for us we simply couldn’t have chosen a more special place than the Outrigger Konotta Maldives resort.

The scene was set from the moment we touched down at Kaadedhdhoo Airport when we were met by the courteous Outrigger team.

They collected our cases and took us a short hop to the jetty for our boat transfer to the resort.

As you sail away from the mainland you’ll get the feeling that you’re heading towards paradise

I couldn’t help but exclaim out loud “NO WAY, that can’t be our boat” as I spotted the gleaming white floating palace that Roman Abramovich would have been proud of.

We hopped on board the private luxury yacht for the 40-minute Miami Vice-style speedy transfer.

As you lose sight of land you get the overwhelming feeling that you are sailing toward paradise — and believe me, you are.

As much as we wanted to arrive at our own personal paradise island, we didn’t want this spectacular cruise to end. This surely is how the rich and famous live.

It wasn’t long before we caught our first glimpse of the tiny magical island that was to be our haven for the next seven days.

Lapped by crystal clear waves, in a beautiful turquoise coloured ocean, unrivaled luxury awaited us.
Our warm welcome was completed as we were greeted with traditional garlands and drummers — Mr and Mrs Sweeney had arrived in Heaven!

Outrigger Maldives resort offers complete privacy in their sanctuary of super-chic Beach Pool Villas which are just a coconut throw from the stunning white sands.

And if that’s still too far away for you, there are exquisite over-water bungalows so you don’t have to move an inch to grab a spot by the sea.

The luxurious surroundings are matched by the fantastic service.
We were showered with hospitality and made to feel at home the moment our toes hit the sand.

It’s this that makes this magical Maldives resort a ‘one-of-a-kind destination’ where we enjoyed seclusion, romance and complete relaxation.

Everything oozes quality at this romantic resort

Everything, and I literally mean everything, just oozes quality.

You might have all mod cons at your fingertips, and yet you really do have the feeling that you are on your own personal, secluded desert island too.

It’s a real castaway experience (OK, with Wifi, air con, Jacuzzi, and minibar included).

Absolutely no luxury has been spared. Our dual-level villa had a beautifully designed and huge bedroom, with a gorgeous outdoor bathroom with a tub even I could swim in!

A staircase led up to a private rooftop solarium which looked out over the tops of the coconut palm trees toward the Indian Ocean.

We spent many a blissful hour up there.

Other than the lapping of the ocean waves, the only other sound you can hear as you relax on your rooftop sanctuary is the water feature as it cascades into your stunning private swimming pool below.

And if this all sounds luxurious and exotic, it is.

And when it came to eating (my fave pastime) just a five-minute walk along the beach took us to the wonderful and very special Blue Salt and Nala Rah restaurants.

Executive chef Chris Long and his team have designed an A La Carte menu which is made up of a mixture of traditional Maldivian cuisine and European dishes with a twist.

It’s a menu carefully crafted to suit every palate and taste.

As you might expect local fish features heavily but it’s the variety and diversity that really makes it stand out.

And if you are vegetarian you will be delighted with the number of options available for you to choose from.

There are almost as many V dishes as non-vegetarian — much to veggie Elaine’s delight.

And if there is a dish the team notice that you particularly enjoyed, chef will surprise you at dinner with special ‘personal’ recommendations.

Traditional Maldavian food is healthy, light and fragrant, with curries featuring often — even for BREAKFAST.

Yup the traditional tuna curry is simply not to be missed — believe me I tried it on more than one morning.

The Tepanyaki, Shushi and Sashimi at Nala Rah are delicious and if you should get the opportunity during your stay then do make sure to try chef’s seven-course Tepanayki menu.

It’s exceptional.

Outrigger Maldives is such a special place for honeymooners.

You can spend all day literally enjoying the solitude, busy doing nothing, or if you choose you can fill your days with some fabulous adventures.

We were literally spoilt for choice — a dolphin cruise, a blue lagoon trip, a desert island adventure, a sunset cruise or stargazing from a boat were just some of the things on offer.

But remember, of course, that it’s perfectly OK just to do absolutely nothing at all too — which is what we did 90 per cent of the time.

As you would expect scuba and snorkeling are available round the clock.

When you arrive, head to the dive centre where the guys will measure you up for what you need which you keep for the duration of your stay.

The marine biology snorkeling sessions are really informative as well as being great fun, and there are also daily group snorkeling sessions to nearby reefs and islands.

One thing you should definitely do is pay a visit to Navasana Spa where your entire body will be pampered with the secret healing properties of coconut.

Who knew . . . I thought they were only good for Bounty bars!

But nope, spa director Amanda and her team of therapists produce their own oil from coconuts grown on the island.

With five treatment rooms, an indoor swimming pool, hydrotherapy facility, relaxation lounges and signature therapies Navasana offers ultimate relaxation.

It was a real treat for us newlyweds and a wonderful way to while away a morning.

And as if all that luxury and attention isn’t enough, if you are on honeymoon or celebrating an anniversary or event, the team will pull out all the stops to make it special.

For us that meant a surprise honeymoon dinner on the beach. It was truly magical.

As we dined under the stars, we had a surprise visit from a family of five dolphins as they played and chased each other right by our table at the water’s edge.

Chef had remembered all our favourite dishes from during the week and created a menu just for us.

It’s that kind of attention to detail that makes Outrigger Konotta a real standout from other Maldivian resorts.

We sat by the bonfire they had built just for us and watched the sun go down which made our last evening one we will never forget — not that we are likely to forget even one second of our time spend in this blissful place.

We were barefoot in paradise, in the most wonderful place you can possibly imagine and had the honeymoon of our dreams.

An anniversary trip might be calling soon!
