Islamist NGO to give food aid to poor during Ramadan

The Islamist group Jamiyyathul Salaf will give food aid to the poor during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.

The NGO’s president, Sheikh Abdulla Bin Mohamed Ibrahim, told Vnews that the nationwide programme will aim to help at least 100 families.

Families will be selected under a point scheme and will receive assistance with food and bill payments for one month.

The aid will be provided by Jamiyyathul Salaf in collaboration with private contributors and well-wishers, he said.

It wants the new ‘Sanaabil’ programme to run as a permanent project. Applications are available from their office and website and the deadline is May 10.

This year’s Ramadan is expected to begin mid-May after the sighting of the new moon as per the Islamic lunar calendar.

During Ramadan, all adult and able-bodied Muslims are expected to fast from dawn to dusk, abstain from bodily pleasures, and focus on self-reflection, prayer, and charity. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam.

Workers in the Maldives are also entitled to MVR3,000 (US$195) as a mandatory Ramadan bonus.

The country has a tradition of wealthy business owners and politicians, including MPs and councillors, providing food and financial aid for the month.
