Maldives Police Service have confirmed that the secret documents of police investigations into the Supreme Court’s ruling of February 1, which were leaked on social media on Tuesday, were legitimate.

The leaked documents included testimonies detailing the actions of Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Judge Ali Hameed in connection to the top court ruling, including claims that the two had influenced other justices to manipulate verdicts. Other documents included statements given by senior police officials about the actions of the then Commissioner of Police Ahmed Areef regarding the ruling.

Speaking at a press conference held at Iskandharu Koshi on Wednesday, Police spokesperson Ahmed Shifan confirmed that the leaked documents were legitimate, and condemned it as a lowly act committed by some influential people. Stating that the police were “seriously investigating the issue”, Shifan warned that the perpetrators would be prosecuted.

The documents were of the police’s investigations into the top court’s landmark ruling of February 1 which ordered the release of nine high profile political prisoners and to reinstate unseated legislators. The government had declared a state of emergency four days later, and arrested Saeed and Hameed of the apex court along with former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, among others, under accusations of bribery and attempting to topple the government. Those detained over the case have been charged with terrorism.

Highlighting the ongoing trials, Shifan stated that the police were aware of certain entities attempting to influence the trials with bribes. He said that such acts were committed to taint public trust in the police force and the judicial system and obstruct the legal system.

“I guarantee that none of these acts would affect the police’s integrity and determination.”
