MPL are through to the semi-finals of Club Maldives Cup 2018, penetrating twice through the solid defense of MTCC to beat them 2-1.
MPL dominated from the beginning, keeping a slow pace in the game. As such, the first shot of the game came only in the sixth minute from kickoff.
More goal scoring opportunities were created by MPL in the first half, as they recorded more shots than MTCC. Ali Shifau (Rona) of MTCC was denied on four occasions in the first half by the promising goal keeper of MTCC, Vishan Abdul Majeed.
First goal of the match came in the second half from Ali Shifau of MPL, where he rifled a low shot from the right flank to find the back of the net in a tight angle.
Ibrahim Shanoon (Zappy) of MTCC gave constant threat to the MPL goal to find a lifeline. He found three shots on target in the second half, besides his indirect involvement in MTCC’s attacks in several instances.
MTCC found the equalizer five minutes from fulltime, with a powerful effort by Akmal Mohamed (Akoobe), where the single handed effort by MPL’s goal keeper Hussain Nasih was not enough to stop the ball from going inside his goal.
Husham Ibrahim (Huttey) sealed the winner for MPL with a decent curling free kick, a strike from the out-side foot of the right leg, roughly from eleven yards. Ball went into the goal from the tight angle, beautifully curving away from the wall, and then to the goal. Perhaps the wall not in good shape.
MTCC is yet to record a win against MPL in the history of Club Maldives Cup. Both these teams played in the final of the very first tournament of Club Maldives Cup in 2006, where MPL won on penalties.
MPL will face Maldivian in the semi-final on Friday night.
