Luxury eco-resort operator Soneva has announced it will open its first over-water villas in April 2020 at Soneva Fushi, its flagship private island resort in the Baa Atoll of the Maldives.
The eight one- and two-bedroom water retreats have been designed with privacy in mind as well as to make the most of the “picture-perfect ocean vistas,” the company said.
The 6,300-square-foot one-bedrooms and the 9,200-square-foot two-bedrooms have private pools, as well as slides that lead directly into the Indian Ocean. Guests have the option of selecting sunrise or sunset views.
Imagine sipping coffee at sunrise or wine at twilight surrounded by nothing but ocean and sky.
The villas, created with sustainably sourced materials such as reclaimed driftwood, feature large outdoor decks with sunken seating areas and catamaran nets over the ocean, as well as Soneva’s signature outdoor bathrooms. The master bedrooms feature retractable roofs, so guests can stargaze from the comfort of their beds.

The starting price for the new water retreats at Soneva Fushi is $2,626 per night for the one-bedroom and $5,232 per night for the two-bedroom.
“We are very proud to announce this exciting new phase for Soneva Fushi,” says Sonu Shivdasani, founder and CEO of Soneva. “When we first launched Soneva Fushi back in 1995, we redefined tourism in the Maldives with our unique vision that pioneered the concept of sustainable luxury.
“After more than two decades at the forefront of the global luxury tourism sector and as a bucket list destination in the Maldives, we strive to evolve with our guests’ ever-changing needs,” said Shivdasani. “While we will always remain true to the much-loved spirit and laidback ethos of Soneva Fushi, the new water retreats will elevate our offering, ensuring that our guests’ experience is more memorable and special than ever before.”
The design and choice of location of the water retreats followed a comprehensive environmental assessment within the resort to ensure that the Baa Atoll’s terrestrial and marine ecosystems remained unharmed by construction and the subsequent use and maintenance of the villas, the company said. As with all of Soneva’s carbon-neutral properties, construction materials for the villas were sourced sustainably, while the low impact over-water design maintains and complements the natural beauty of the tranquil coastal setting.
Located in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Soneva Fushi offers 63 private villas ranging in size from one to nine bedrooms, each with its own stretch of beach, most with private pools. The villas are situated among dense foliage close to a pristine coral reef.
