In pictures: St. Regis Maldives Vommuli’s award-winning design

In the Maldives, there are gorgeous resorts aplenty, but The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort has outdone them all, according to last month’s Prix Versailles award ceremony. The recently opened five-star property was presented with the “Special Prize Exterior” award that honours its architectural concept, which was created to complement its Maldivian surroundings.

Designed by WOW Architects | Warner Wong Design, its winning look has been inspired by the local traditions, marine life and culture.

The Indian Ocean’s majestic manta rays can be seen in the design of the resort’s overwater villas, while the island villas resemble a modern interpretation of the traditional Maldivian fishing hut.

Inside the villas, guests comfortably settle into a space that reflects the island’s textures and patterns through such décor as coral chandeliers, headboards made of recycled glass beads, and sofas with fabric that recalls the rippled water.

When sitting at the sunset bar, it’s easy to imagine sighting a placid whale shark, as the space has been inspired by the gentle giant’s shape. Inside, the wooden ceiling showcases an etched mural created through the traditional Maldivian art form of pyrography.

At Iridium Spa, the overwater sanctuary features the “Blue Hole Pool”, a modern and manmade take on the deep sinkholes often found in reefs.

Even the library is remarkable, having been sculpted in the shape of a towering seashell with carpeting lining the interior that is reminiscent of the lagoon’s waves.

Only just opened in November 2016, The St. Regis Vommuli Resort vaunts tropical luxury across the island’s 22 acres, and is comprised of 77 overwater and beach villas, each sumptuously appointed with their own private pool.
