Imports up by 24 percent in July

The amount of goods imported to the Maldives increased by 24 percent in the month of July, statistics show.

According to Maldives Customs Service, goods worth MVR 3.1 billion were imported last July, while the record for the previous year was MVR 2.5 billion.

Statistics show that 15 percent of imports were from Singapore, followed by China and the United Arab Emirates at 14 percent, India at 13 percent, and Malaysia at seven percent.

Revenue from Import Duty also increased by 20 percent with MVR 252 million in July.

Meanwhile, the amount of goods exported from the Maldives last July also spiked significantly. Exports show an increase of 29 percent with good worth MVR 202 million exported last month, while the amount exported last year July was MVR 157 million.

The bulk of exports was fish products of which 43 percent was exported to Thailand.
