How to travel in Maldives
When you’re visiting the tropical islands of Maldives, getting around can be an issue — only because there are so many ways to travel from the airport to your island or between the islands. While keeping your budget in mind, you will have to pick from sea planes, boats, dhonis, etc. Here are all the ways you can travel in Maldives.
The most obvious and probably the only way to get to Maldives is by plane. Located in the tropical warm waters of the Indian Ocean, Maldives is made up of 26 atolls. The Male International Airport is located close to the capital city of Male, which is where tourists who fly in to the island start their holiday from. The airport is on Hulhule Island in the North Male atoll. As there are many inbound international flights to Maldives, you have multiple options on picking the best airline. Budget airlines are the best way to travel to Maldives if it involves a short flight time, for example, travelling from Sri Lanka to Maldives is about 45 minutes.
Once you land at the airport and depending on which Maldives luxury resort you’re staying at, transport would almost always be provided. Also depending on the location of your hotel, you will have to decide what the best mode of transport is. Hotels that are located a good distance away from the airport; provide guests with the option of travelling via sea plane. Sea planes are fast and quite fun as it offers you a lovely aerial view of the islands. Sea planes are often used when the transfer by boat is long. In Maldives, there are two main companies for sea planes, namely; Trans Maldivian Airways and Maldivian Air Taxi. Sea planes operate from 6am to 5:30 pm and never fly after the sun sets. The sea plane terminal is located a short distance away from the airport and you would have to get on a bus to reach the terminal.
The most popular travel method in Maldives is the speed boat. With hotels such as Velassaru Maldives located closer to the airport, a speed boat transfer is the best and most ideal way to travel to the island from the airport. Most resorts in Maldives organise airport transfers, however if you wish to travel to another island, you can hire the services of the speed boat taxis to take you anywhere, especially if you want to travel from the airport to the Male city. Speed boats can operate 24 hours a day and have no time restrictions unlike the sea plane. The speed boat jetty is located just outside the gates of the International airport, making it easy to locate after your flight! If you have the option to choose from the speedboat or a sea plane, the latter is more expensive and not advisable if travelling on a budget. Speed boats are cost effective and if you’re lucky enough, you’ll be able to see some dolphins on the way to your resort.
