Maldives Ports Limited (MPL)’s CEO Mohamed Junaid resigned from his post late Tuesday.
Junaid, who shares a close relationship with President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, told Mihaaru that he made the decision in order to give more time to his family business.
Before he was appointed to the post of MPL’s CEO last April, Junaid was the Commissioner General of Maldives Customs Service, prior to which he has filled the positions of CEO and Chairman of MPL as well.
Recently, Junaid has been facing criticism by some politicians over issues between MPL and Meridiam Services, a private company that was contracted to supply fuel to MPL and which holds the interest of Riyaz Rasheed, the Deputy Leader of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and MP for Vilufushi constituency.
However, it is not confirmed that his resignation has any connections with the past issues of MPL.
