Maldives Hajj Corporation has decided to lay off a significant amount of employees in order to cut down overall expenditure.

In an internal memo issued last Wednesday, the company announced its board’s decision to make changes to staff posts and lay off a significant number of employees in order to hike the corporation’s profit.

The company has already commenced layoffs. According to the memo, Hajj Corporation will give the dismissed staff their notices and financial compensation as per the law.

Hajj Corporation did not divulge the total number of planned layoffs and the changes to be made.

The corporation had last January dismissed its former managing director Yameen Idrees and board member Farhad Dawood. The company’s current managing director is Idrees Ismail.

Maldives Hajj Corporation is a state-run company founded in 2013 under a presidential decree. The corporation was established to safely send people on pilgrimages to Saudi Arabia and prevent swindling of pilgrims.
